What are the Holy Days of Obligation, and when are they celebrated?

January 1 - MARY, MOTHER OF GOD
* When this Holy Day falls on a Saturday or Monday, obligation to attend Mass is suspended.

ASCENSION OF THE LORD
This Holy Day is celebrated on the 7th Sunday of Easter in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

August 15 - ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN
*When this Holy Day falls on a Saturday or Monday, obligation to attend Mass is suspended.

November 1 - ALL SAINTS DAY
*When this Holy Day falls on a Saturday or Monday, obligation to attend Mass is suspended.

December 8 - IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF MARY
Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States, and therefore carries the obligation to attend Mass on this date.

December 25 - CHRISTMAS
The Nativity of the Lord, regardless of the day of the week, is designated a holy day of obligation.
