Sacristan Ministry
Preparing God’s House for Worship
The sacristan has a unique opportunity to pray silently in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament while
working and offering service to the Lord in His Sanctuary.
Sacristan Ministry
The sacristan is responsible for:
- Caring and maintaining St. Hubert’s sacred vessels, vestments, linens, oils, holy water, and all liturgical items.
- Providing a clean and tidy worship space, including the sanctuary, the shrine, the gathering area, and the two sacristies.
- Ensuring that all items required for St. Hubert’s liturgies are in adequate supply.
Specific Activities
The responsibilities of the sacristan are performed two days a week. On Monday mornings, the sacristan(s)
tidies the worship space after weekend liturgies. On Thursday mornings, the
sacristan(s) prepare the sanctuary with clean linens and proper candles, and
dusts and mops the floors and other areas and grooms and waters the plants. The
sacristan helper has a unique opportunity to pray silently in the presence of
the Blessed Sacrament while working and offering service to the Lord in His
Sanctuary.
Time and Talents
This ministry is open to both men and women who don’t mind using “elbow grease” in the worship space or doing
laundry at home. The energy and desire to push a mop, polish, dust and perform
other needed works is the call of the sacristan(s). This ministry thrives on the
realization that parishioners will enjoy a clean and lovely worship space
because of their works and services. As a team, the sacristan ministry
accomplishes what is seldom noticed, a ministry of hospitality similar to our
efforts of readying our homes for visitors. Sacristan helpers need several hours
a week to perform their tasks and those who wish to launder and iron
purificators will need several hours every other month.
