Peace & Justice

“If you want peace, work for justice.” Pope Paul VI

You can become as involved as you want to. The only requirement is a desire to live out the social implications of the Gospel.

What We’re About

In light of Catholic social teaching, we want to raise awareness and educate parishioners about current injustices present in our world today and take action appropriate to a parish community.

The Education for Justice Web Site  http://www.educationforjustice.org/  was created to help teachers, social action directors, parish members, campus ministers, and others in leadership roles to meet the challenge of sharing Catholic Social Teaching and bringing greater awareness to social justice issues. Through all of the materials available on the web site, we seek not only to introduce Catholic Social Teaching to a wider audience but to help deepen the knowledge of this essential element of faith and to help develop solidarity with all those in the global community who are suffering and oppressed.

Immigration

U.S. Bishops speak out on Labor Day about Immigration:

"The immigration status quo is unacceptable and unsustainable.  The system is broken.  We need far-reaching and comprehensive reform.  There is no fence long enough or high enough that can wall out the human and economic forces that drive immigration."

Have you heard the following MYTHS about Immigration Reform? "Immigrants don't pay taxes" "Immigrants take jobs away from Americans." "Most immigrants cross the border illegally."

These UNTRUTHS are dispelled by the US Catholic Bishops. Learn what the Bishops have to say.

What Do We Do?

We highlight current issues in our world that need our prayer and action. We do this through bulletin articles, hosting speakers, encouraging participation in signature campaigns for social issues, providing opportunities for outreach, sponsoring discussion groups and workshops. We have sponsored:

  • Workshops on racism and ethnic sensitivity
  • Lenten discussion groups on racism
  • Lecture on Islam
  • Signature campaign in support of Muslim neighbors
  • Education program about the death penalty
  • Signature campaign against the death penalty
  • Support for PADS and the Peace Center, which minister to the homeless
  • Cluster meetings with neighboring parishes to address affordable housing

Want to Become Part of Peace & Justice Ministry?

You can become as involved as you want to, or as your schedule permits. The only requirement is a desire to live out the social implications of the Gospel. Monthly meetings are held at members’ homes on the third Tuesday of the month. We come together to reflect, discuss, and form plans of action. For those interested, there are various educational activities offered such as racism workshops and facilitator training for racism workshops, presentations and discussion groups in the Chicago area.
