Parish History

On May 27, 1960 Rev. Leo E. Wincek was appointed pastor of a new parish in Hoffman Estates, formerly a mission of St. Theresa in Palatine. In the beginning, Masses were held in the dining room of a local tavern, the Buggy Whip. Soon a temporary church was built on an eight-acre site.

The first major building project was that of a brick school on Flagstaff. The Felician Sisters of Chicago came to staff the school, which was dedicated in April 1962.

Hoffman Estates was rapidly being developed, and the Catholic population grew accordingly. By 1963 an addition to the school had to be constructed, bringing the total number of classrooms to 17. In 1983 the library was expanded and five more classrooms were added. The present school serves children from pre-school through grade eight and enrolls over 800.

A permanent church was erected in 1966-67. Also, a convent was build to accommodate 12 sisters.

The first division of the parish took place in 1966 when St. Marcelline was formed to serve families south of Schaumburg Road. Later St. Matthew would be erected east of Roselle Road, and the Church of the Holy Spirit would be opened on Bode Road.

In June 1976 Rev. William J. Shields was named pastor of St. Hubert. In the fall of 1977 a three-story building was completed to serve as rectory, administration center and Religious Education center. In 1985 an addition was constructed for this building.

After the Felician Sisters left the parish in 1990, the convent building was renovated to accommodate Religious Education offices, a music room and kindergarten.

Father Shields retired from St. Hubert in 1991, and Rev. Eugene Nowak was appointed pastor.

Throughout the continual growth and expansion of St. Hubert, now numbering 3,500 families, parishioners have been served by many and varied activities and organizations. The emphasis has been on worship, education and service. Presently, the parish Pastoral Council, along with five Commissions, aids in setting direction for future grown in faith and Christian values.
